Cathy Cunningham-Little: MANIFESTING LUMINANCE

Cathy Cunningham-Little is a sculptor who uses glass, light, shadow, cast reflections and color interactions to explore perceptual phenomena. In her new series of work in Manifesting Luminance, she continues to explore structural properties of light with self-illuminating studies in geometry and saturated hues, creating vivid and multi-faceted color compositions in space.

By using glass developed for industrial technology, which has unique optical properties, the artist moves away from the idea of a work of art as a physical object and shifts towards a more phenomenological direction of perceived depth and volume.

Cunningham-Little’s visual language of color and perception are influenced by the sculptures of Minimalists Donald Judd and Larry Bell, and the color theories of painter Josef Albers. However, without the two- or three-dimensional object as the primary or stand alone medium, Cunningham-Little’s work engages viewers to experience the dissolution of boundaries typically belonging to substance and space.

Based in San Antonio, Texas, Cunningham-Little is the recipient of several scholarships and grants, among them include the Individual Artist Grant from the Department of Art and Cultural Affairs, City of San Antonio and ArtPace Travel Grant to travel to Germany for research purposes. She has participated in artist residencies at U-Cross Foundation in Wyoming, Houston Center for Contemporary Glass, National Park Service in Del Rio, Texas, and Kunstlerhaus Bethanian in Berlin, Germany. Her work has been included in solo exhibitions throughout Texas at venues such as International Museum of Art and Sciences, McNay Art Museum, Institute of Mexican Cultures, Blue Star Contemporary Art Space, San Antonio International Airport, and Mexic-Arte Museum. Manifesting Luminance is the artist’s second solo show with Chandra Cerrito Contemporary.
