Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to announce Shift, a solo exhibition of work by Connie Goldman. Developed over the last two years, Goldman’s most recent dimensional paintings evidence the tenuous relationship between flux and stasis that is the barometer of all living things. As the artist has observed over her 5-plus decades, “life is change.” Constant change is expressed through shifting depths, forms, and colors within her sculptural multi-section panels. More vivid than much of her past work, the paintings’ saturated colors individualize and define spaces within them.
Alleviating the divide between edifice and image, Goldman explores the duality between 3D and 2D. Dynamic sculptural shapes coexist with monochromatic surfaces. While generally maintaining one color per plane to emphasize the panels’ structures, Goldman also creates perceptual ambiguity with occasional bicolor surfaces. The resulting visual complexity requires time and movement around the object to fully grasp. A momentary equilibrium is struck between one shape and what it may become, between one color and those surrounding it, between tension and calm.
About the Artist:
Connie Goldman holds an MFA in painting/drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in psychology from UT Austin. She has taught at several Bay Area Universities including San Francisco State University, the San Francisco Art Institute, and Santa Rosa Junior College. Goldman’s works have been exhibited internationally, and are in many public and private collections, including the Laguna Beach Art Museum and the El Paso Museum of Art. Her work has also been shown at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, di Rosa in Napa, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit, and the Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, CT.
